Hmm was wondering if anyone knows where I can obtain a copy of the ghost utility that can be stored in one disk and use that disk to boot in to dos on machines running Win2K etc.? Probably version 6.03 or something, can't seem to find it anywhere.Would very much appreciate if anyone who's having this utility is able to send a copy to me or provide any info on where I can get it as long as it's free. I do not know whether I posted this question correctly but since it has something to do with storage. Norton does offer a free trial version, and it looks like they used to, too.
+ you don't have any memory limitations (DOS version of ghost has crashed a lot on. I can't see gaining the kind of word-of-mouth excitement it'd need. Be an X.5 in 12 months, with service packs and whatnot in between.
If you search around you may be able to find an older version of the free trial on the shareware-type sites.a quick browse revealed to me, for example:(this one looked to be a demo, not a trial version)You might also considder one of the many freeware programs that are similar to this. Here is one, for example:I have not tried it, but if it doesn't work for you there are many, many other freeware or shareware alternatives.Hope that helps. Jvuz:Thanks for the comments.magarity:I've been here long enough so I know the rules and regulations. Thanks for pointing out though.
What I'm not aware of is that that utility is not free or shareware or something. I had a disk with 6.03 and somehow the disk got corrupted. So that's why I'm asking. And I'm just asking for older ones cos I've used them before but if the newer ones are available then I'll look into them. Oh yeah, I have 6.03 in a bundled cd for a mo-bo but it won't work in W2K. It needs to be booted up in DOS.zag2me:Yeah, same here.
Would prefer all in one disk kinda solution.zkanker:Ok thanks. Will look into those links soon. How the heck can I boot my PC running W2K into DOS (not safe mode), the setup boot disks sure didn't help. Can I do anything about the 6.03 that I have in the CD, to copy it to a disk and make it bootable for W2K? That is how my old 6.03 works.
I wasn't directing that at you so much as to anyone who might jump in here with 'hey, email me and I'll attach the program in a reply' types who are suprisingly common.Oh, I see the source of everyone's confusion. Let me summarize and see if this is correct:1. Neo78 had an older PC (Win98 or similar) and a version of Ghost on CDROM from the same time period.2. Neo78 installed the old Ghost from CDROM and made a happy utility floppy.3.
Neo78 bought a new PC with Win20004. Win2000 refuses to allow old Ghost version from CDROM to install.5. Happy utility floppy is now unhappy due to some bad sectors or whatever. So the real question here is: How does Neo78 make a utility floppy from the Win2k-uninstallable old version of Ghost on CDROM?Potential answer: find a friend/coworker/relative who still has a Win98 machine. Install Ghost and make several new happy utility floppies just to have a good supply. Uninstall Ghost from other person's computer.Does that sound about right? Magarity:Yeah I know.
Just wanna make it clear that I myself wouldn't dare of asking pirated stuff in here. It's just that I'm not aware of it, so like I said thanks for saving my skin anyway.:PHmm, looks like I'm confusing everyone who's reading my question. Ok let me rephrase them.1. Where can I get a utility similar to Norton Ghost, as long as it's legal, shareware/freeware?
If I can't obtain Norton Ghost free then what other suitable replacements available?2. I do not have an older PC running W98, I have been using PCs with W2K all along. Previously I have a disk with Norton Ghost 6.03 in it. I put it in the drive and boot my PC (W2K) to DOS from it and do all the imaging stuff. But somehow my disk got corrupted and can't be read.
Also, what I meant by setup boot disks are the 4 disks that was created when running W2K makeboot program, not W98.However, I have currently a bundled cd for a mo-bo that has Norton Ghost 6.03. The prob is I can't run the 6.03 in the CD from W2K and it's not a bootable CD. It has to be executed from DOS, not even 'safe mode with command prompt'. So right now, what can I do to be able to boot to DOS and run it??
And yeah, Magarity got my question right but summarized it wrongly,:P Hope this makes it clearer. Thanks in advance. Neo you need Ghost 8 or better I believe to you it with Win2K. You can make a ghost boot disk on a pre-existing win2k PC and use that (it will work fine). The key is getting Ghost, which as you noticed comes with about every motherboard sold today.
If your PC is newer look through the driver CDs, if not many of the more 'wholesale' type of PC places (I would go somewhere local) will sell OEM (cheaper, no box) versions of this type of software without requiring a qualifying purchase of hardware ($15 or less is my guess).
